Hollyburn + Hillstrom Mountain
This trip report is for an ascent of Hollyburn and Hillstrom Mountain in North Vancouver.
Elevation: 1326m/4350ft
Date: May 22, 2024
Range: North Vancouver Mountains
Planned a long day at Cypress Mountain today, so packed the van up and set up in the parking lot at the base of Cypress Lodge.
I chose Hollyburn Mountain in the morning and began the trek from the side parking lot below the main one.
Fairly straightforward start uphill, since it’s the spring the snow melt is increasing and there is a steady stream down the first leg of the hike. Once past the power lines the hike becomes more forested and opens to the Winter Access trail.
The trail starts wide and then becomes more narrow as it winds parallel out and back to the larger one. There’s still a considerable amount of snow on the mountain and started about 200 metres past the power lines.
I made the mistake of following my AllTrails map inside of my brain that told me to stay on the wider trail as they both probably led the same way. It was only after falling into a growing stream and dousing my left foot in water that I decided to take the wider path up the rest of the way.
Tough trail finding as it looked like no one was hiking there for a while, but I made it up in good time.
On the way down I saw that I was near Hillstorm Mountain and decided to go have a look to see what it was like. Unfortunately, it wasn’t much to behold….
Quickly made my way back down, grabbed some lunch, did some work then went off to my next peak in the afternoon.
